Courses.
Both TU courses below were designed and built from scratch. The emphasis is on students leaving able to do something — deploy a model, analyze a machine, write documentation another person can reproduce — rather than having seen a set of slides.
AI in Power and Signal Systems
Cross-listed graduate / undergraduate · 19 students
A new course built from the ground up on deploying task-specific AI tools in practical power and energy systems. Students work through specialized practical exercises and situational case studies for hands-on training in advanced AI algorithms, then carry an individual research project through to reproducible documentation.
Electric Power Systems
Undergraduate · 23 students
Electromechanical energy conversion, AC/DC machinery, and fundamental power concepts. The syllabus and curriculum were developed from scratch and modernized to connect classical power engineering theory to how the field is actually practiced today, using interactive lectures, problem sets, and exams built around engagement rather than recall.
Teaching tools
ECE 4863/6863 uses interactive browser simulations built for the course. One lets students turn a reinforcement learning agent loose on a power system with no constraints, and watch the controller damage the thing it was meant to stabilize — a failure mode that is much easier to understand once you have caused it yourself.
GRAIL is building more tools for experiential learning in power and signals engineering.
Outreach
GRAIL takes part in STEM outreach around Tulsa. Suman has judged FIRST robotics competitions, including the League Tournament at Bishop Kelley High School and the Oklahoma Regional Championship at Tulsa Memorial High School. In 2026 the lab welcomed a summer research intern from Cascia Hall Preparatory School.
